Reviving Legacy: A Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Windows XP

Despite being an older operating system, Windows XP is still maintained and appreciated by many retro-computing enthusiasts struggling with outdated hardware. 

Installing Windows XP is a very easy task if done by following some proper steps, either for nostalgia’s sake or compatibility with applications. Here is a full guide on how to install Windows XP ISO with ease. You just have to adhere to all the directions that are present in the guide. 

Prerequisites Before Installation

Before you begin, ensure you have the following:

  • A bootable installation CD of Windows XP or an ISO file. 
  • A valid Windows XP product key
  • A PC with at least 64MB RAM (128MB recommended) and 1.5GB free disk space. 
  • CD/DVD Drive or Bootable USB (if using an ISO). 

It is also important to back up any file that you have on your device, as any existing data will be erased during the installation. 

Step 1: Booting from Installation Media

  1. Insert the Windows XP Installation CD into the CD/DVD drive or plug in the USB bootable.
  2. Restart the computer then enter into BIOS/UEFI setup pressing F2, F12, DEL, or ESC, depending on the manufacturer, during boot.
  3. In the Boot Order settings, select CD/DVD drive or USB as the first boot device.
  4. Save the changes and exit BIOS so that it restarts.
  5. Press any key when prompted to boot from the installation media.

Step 2: Installing Windows XP

  1. After the Windows XP setup, you will be able to see a blue screen with setup options. Press the Enter key after which you need to hit F8. 
  2. Click on the partition on which you want to install Windows XP. You can do any of the following:
  • Delete an existing partition (if needed) by selecting it and pressing D, followed by L to confirm.
  • Create a new partition by selecting unallocated space and pressing C.
  • Choose an existing partition and format it using NTFS (recommended) or FAT32.
  1. After selecting the partition, choose Format the partition using NTFS. 
  2. Setup will now copy files and restart your computer.

Step 3: Completing the Installation

After rebooting, the Windows XP ISO File installation will continue with a graphical interface.

  1. Choose the language, time zone, and the keyboard layout.
  2. Write the name of the computer along with the admin password.
  3. Enter your Windows XP product key as prompted.
  4. Choose all the network settings and set up your account. 
  5. The setup should now be complete, and the system should reboot.

Step 4: Finalizing Setup and Installing Drivers

Upon the first boot, configure the display settings as prompted.

  1. Activate Windows XP (if required) and complete the setup of the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE). 
  2. Install the sound, display, network, and chipset drivers downloaded from the manufacturer’s website or driver CD.
  3. Update Windows XP with the available service packs (if any) for better security and performance.
